Pachira is a genus of tropical trees distributed in Central and South America, Africa and India. They are classified under the Bombacoideae subfamily of the Malvaceae family. Previously, this genus was assigned to Bombacaceae. Before that this genus was found in Sterculiaceae (now obsolete). About 77 species have been identified. They form small or large trees with digitate leaves and the fruit is a unicellular ovoid woody capsule that opens by a number of divisions and contains many seeds. The genus name is derived from the language spoken in Guyana. Hailing from a faraway, sunny land, Pachira is a lush species, especially suitable for the beginner indoor plant enthusiast. With its braided trunk and leaves that morph into stars at breakneck speed.
